What Have You Got?

Speaker – Eld. Ayodeji Adesina (Lay Pastor, BHSDAC)
(Narrated by Sis. Ayobola Akwarandu)

Last Sabbath (3rd Jan) in Church, I was so blessed with the message about the widow and the oil by Pastor Ayo Adesina at Blessed Hope SDA Church.  Please read 2 Kings 4: 1 - 7 and see the summary in my own words:

The young woman lost her husband who was in the school of prophets. Just like many of us, the husband was seeking to become used of God and he had unpaid debts. The poor widow was pursued by creditors just like bailiffs knocking our doors in today’s words. Like many of us, she ran to Elisha especially when the ‘bailiffs’ threatened to take her two sons! Imagine!

Elisha under the inspiration of God Almighty empathises with her and asked 'what do you have?' She said ‘ a jar of oil’, Elisha asked her to go out and borrow as many jars as she can from her neighbours, she went out and borrowed, after borrowing, she told the man of God and he said to her, 'shut the door behind you, start pouring the oil', and she poured and poured and poured with her children and the oil only stopped when the jars she borrowed finished. The man of God then told her to sell the oil and pay her debts and use the rest for sustainance. Please note olive oil in Palestine is a main source of trade. Most industries over there then used it as a raw material for their products. Key lessons that came out
  • You have not heard the last verdict until you hear God’s verdict
  • God can multiply the oil you have, remember he made the world from nothing but the spoken Word!
  • Sometimes, God actually encourages us to borrow unto positivity…true! It might be investment ideas, progression in  career ideas, ideas about family, businesses, academics etc God will so bless and enlarge the little oil that you have only if you are bold  and humble enough to declare the little you have.
  • Some miracles are reserved for behind closed doors – note what Elisha said to the widow, 'close the door behind you', imagine the pandemonium if she had done it in front of everybody, infact some will so laugh her to scorn when they see what ‘silly and unbelievable’ thing she wanted to do.
  • Surround yourself with positive people, don’t sit around scoffers
  • Swallow your pride, go and borrow, there may be shame at the time of borrowing, but victory at the time of returns
  • The number of areas that are re-filled depend on the  number of areas you bring to God
  • As God blesses you, go and pay the debts you have brought with you from 2008 and sustain yourself with the remaining blessing.
I sure hope you are blessed by this message just as much as I was.  See you next week!
